Competition Finals

Sunday 20th September saw the finals of our competitions – well some of them anyway. Some had already been completed:

    David PRATT & Denis CRUSE beat Jack INGLE &. Dave GRIMSHAW 6-7, 7-5, 7-5.

    David Pratt’s Unpredictables (Team C)

The weather was fine and proceedings started at 1.00 pm (ambitiously late as it turned out.)

Barney takes aim at hoop 1

Lawn 1 saw the Calverley Cup, our handicap AC competition, between Barney Lewis (9) and Thomas Cullis (-2). By mutual agreement this was played to 14 points – i.e. hoops 1-6 plus peg for each ball, giving Barney 5.5 bisques.  Barney won the toss and put Thomas in to play first, who promptly played into corner 1, giving Barney a potential immediate contact! Barney split the ball into the court and Thomas then continued with a standard ball to the east boundary. After an aggressive start by Barney, using bisques liberally to get started, he ended up with all of them used and hoop 1 still to be made. Naturally Thomas (-2) then made short work of getting both his balls to peg, although as one spectator commented, he managed to make an easy 4 ball break look very difficult!

Phil and Jon in the Hunter

Lawn 2 started off with the Hunter Plate final (GC blocks), between Phil Taylor and Jon Savage. This was completed relatively quickly in two games, with Phil taking the plate 7-4, 7-5. This then allowed Jon to take on Roy Parsons for the Kitching Rose Bowl (GC knockout).  Jon (the 2025 winner) was able to retrieve some pride by taking this match in three games 9-4, 6-7, 9-4. Unfortunately as he was also in the final of the Lewis Shield there was not enough time left so this had to be postponed.

Denis takes aim in the golf doubles

On lawn 3 there was a bit of time travel, as the 2026 golf doubles had already been completed, but the 2025 Golf Doubles final was still outstanding, so this was played between Paul Gamba and Denis Cruse against Jeff Chapman and Kate Sander. This went to three games, with Paul and Denis winning 6-7, 7-5, 7-5.  As Jeff recounted, “We lost the first game on  a ‘golden hoop’- ,#14,   were in control for most of the second game and, although pushed the score didn’t reflect this.  We won the decider on hoop 13 from being 5-5 after the 10th.  Paul and Dennis may recall they left me a very narrow route to hoop 12 which I luckily jawed with my first ball after taking the 11th and Paul pushed me through leaving both of us somewhat impeded to #13  where Kate performed a very effective mid range clear which blocked Dennis as well.to leave black a clear shot.”

The second game on lawn 3 was the final of the Golf High Bisquers between Denis Cruse and Michael Sander, taken by Denis 7-6 , 2-7,  6-7.
