Victory against Eastbourne in U league
After some difficulty in arranging the fixture, Tunbridge Wells and Compton were at last able to meet yesterday in Calverley Gardens for our last U league match of the season.
Richard Platt (7) Anne Bolland (8) David Rimmer (8) and Kevin Maguire (14) travelled up from Eastbourne to vie with Tim Luke (3.5) Phil Taylor (2.5) John Greenwood (2.5) and Chris Barham (9).
The weather was fine although increasingly blustery and cloudy and sadly our lawns less than perfect after a punishing year from the weather. Matches were played to handicap base 6.
The mornings doubles between John and Tim versus Ann and Kevin resulted in victory for RTWCC +1. On the other lawn Richard beat Phil +2 whilst Chris just managed to pip David +1T
An excellent lunch of leek and potato soup followed by pearl barley risotto was provided by Phil – many thanks to him.
The afternoon’s singles went mostly our way, John beat Richard +8, Phil beat Anne +8 and on lawn 2 Tim beat David +9 whilst Chris suffered the only defeat, going down -3T to Kevin.
Tim admits to to flukes that helped him on the way. “Trailing by far in the doubles I missed my return reception ball at hoop four only to hit my pivot ball beyond the peg and rush it to six giving me a perfect 4-ball to take all the way round. Then in the singles I bobbled through a hoop but couldn’t see my reception ball.So shot back through the hoop using the wire to make an angle and got a very lucky hit on a ball four yards beyond the hoop to give me a break all the way round!”
So a 5-2 win for us resulting in not only match victory but winning the league. Well done Tim for captaining us through a most successful season
