A wet end to the season – draw v Ivychurch
Our final match in the Croquet South-East Golf Croquet Handicap league was at home to Ivychurch, on Thursday 5 September. It was supposed to be at Ivychurch but their lawnmower broke down…
The opening round of two doubles matches left us tied at 1-1, with a win for Trevor Houghton-Berry and Dave Grimshaw.
We were still tied overall – at 3-3 – after the singles, in round 2, with wins for Kate Sander and Dave.
There was steady, light rain throughout the morning, but this was becoming heavier after the lunch break.
Dave won rapidly in his singles match in the afternoon before the heavens fully opened and the rain forced the other players off. It soon became apparent that we wouldn’t be able to resume, as there was standing water on all the lawns.
Although we were now 4-3 ahead, the captains agreed a draw, as Ivychurch led in both the games that were in play to bring our league campaign to a wet conclusion!
