Richard Platt wins Pegasus Plate
Competitors came from far and wide for this prestigious tournament (our annual AC Handicap event) ignoring the lessor sporting events happening simultaneously such as Wimbledon and the Euro’s. The big screen in the park showing both these events is only a minor distraction.
Thanks to defending champion Richard Coward for returning the polished trophy from some distance.
A torrential downpour on day one didn’t dampen spirits as we soldiered on manfully until our socks need wringing out. Who said croquet players aren’t tough? Unfortunately, the lawns became only good for ducks so play had to be suspended.
Thanks for everyone’s help packing up in the deluge and marking games. And coming early on the Sunday.
As the tournament reached the final round, we had two clear front runners in unbeaten Philip Taylor and Richard Platt.
They played each other last, so this match effectively became the final with the title on the line. The trophy placed strategically on the edge of the lawn for added pressure. Richard Platt seemed to have the match won but failed to peg out his second ball only for Philip Taylor to hit in. Some late drama ensued, but in the end Richard prevailed. A worthy winner.
Philip Taylor came a close second and had to settle for a handicap reduction and a Toblerone prize as consolation.
Hope to see you all again next year.
